Filicudi, Aeolian Islands, Sicily

The last stretch is on foot.

There's no driveway at La Finestra Sul Mare, the same as most houses on this side of the island. You'll leave the car at one of two spots on Filicudi and walk the rest, a path along the hillside rather than a street.

From Portella

19 minon foot
Easierpacked dirt & gravel

The longer of the two paths, but the gentler one, and the only route marked the whole way by road signs. This is what we point every guest to, especially for a first visit.

Steeper · unsigned

From Vallonazzo

14 minon foot
Steepermostly loose stone

Shorter, but steeper underfoot and not signposted along the way. Better once you already know the route than for your first time up.

The hand-painted sign for La Finestra Sul Mare, where the path from Portella branches off

The only sign along the way, right where the Portella path turns off, hand-painted and easy to miss if you're not looking.

Both paths are perfectly fine in closed sandals. Closed shoes just mean cleaner feet when you arrive. Early morning or just after rain, Vallonazzo's stones get slippery, so Portella is the safer call then.

Travelling with heavy bags? A neighbour carries luggage and groceries up by quad at the start and end of your stay, arranged in advance, see booking. Worth arranging even for a lighter case, the path is no place to wheel one.

This same hillside, with no road to it, is also why the house runs entirely on rainwater and solar power rather than a mains line. More on how that works →
